This week we celebrated Pirate Day by dressing up like pirates in our school uniforms. Sadly, Ms. Beach forgot to wear her famous Jack Sparrow Costume, but we're sure she will have an awesome costume for Halloween! Today in Music we practiced singing nursery rhymes in 6:8 measures.
Since our old teacher, Mrs. Dwyer, has left STM we still have fun in dance with Mrs. Risotto. In her class we do cardio exercises and fun warm ups. In library/tech we are making power points about ourselves. In library we are choosing a scary/mystery book for Halloween.

Faux Friday

Today we did 2 Iowa tests and we had music.  In science wewatched videos and did a tasty lab with chocolaty frosting!    We had PE on Wednesday and did dance on Tuesday.  Wednesday was National Pirate Day! If you went to Krispy Kreme and talked like a pirate or dressed like a pirate you could get 12 donuts or 1 free donut!  We'll celebrate Pirate Day next week!   We have to make a timeline on the Stone Age.  It is due next Friday.

Birthdays: Isabella V.  Ryan  Olivia D.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

Here are pictures of the class working on their Creation Story quilts for Religion!

  • You should properly label each Stone Age period correctly.
  • Be sure to include the dates for each period.
  • Name two accomplishments for each period.  Do not copy these word for word from your textbook!
  • You must include a picture for each period.
  • Use page 32 in your textbook to help.

What's Happening in Religion?

Since Kevin and Josh did such a nice job updating you in Science I thought I would focus on Religion this week!  In Sixth Grade I try to make Religion the first subject every day.  We focus on the Old Testament this year and so we have begun with the Book of Genesis.
The class is studying the 2 Creation stories this week and learning that while they are not scientifically accurate, what is important is that:
  1. Everything in existence is created by God, and He is the source of all life.
  2. Everything that God created is good and depends on Him.
Another important part of our Religion curriculum is our prayer life.  In our class we pray at the beginning of the day with the school, before and after lunch, and again at the end of the day.  This week our class is in charge of preparing the readings for Friday's Mass.  All students will have the privilege of serving as a lector at a school Mass this year.

Service to our community is also part of the Religion curriculum.  This Friday is "Sandwiches for the Needy."  I would like all 6th graders to participate.  They should be able to make an extra sandwich on Thursday night or Friday morning and label it for Martin de Porres House.  It will only take a few minutes, but it is important for them to truly take take an active role in feeding the hungry.   This is part of our call to "Think Like Jesus!"  Also, please remember our schoolwide toiletries drive for our service members serving overseas.  Thanks to those who have already sent in donations!

Have a wonderful week!

Science:
In science we learned about plate tectonics, sea floor spreading, Earth's lower layers and continental drift.

Continental Drift is the theory that all the continents and other landforms were once joined together. (It is also part of the new Ice Age movie!) Alfred Wegner came up with this theory. He named the super continent "Pangaea" (From the Greek Goddess Gaea and and the Greek God  Pan) Some of his pieces of evidence were that the continents "fit" together and that fossils of a certain plant were found on every continent.

Sea-Floor Spreading is the theory that the ocean floors move like "conveyor belts".  It was proposed by an American geologist named Harry Hess. He explained that molten material rises from the mantle and pushes material previously risen to the side. The older material then sunk into the mantle again. He also said that the North and South Poles reverse every 600,000 years.

Earth's layers:
Mantle, Athenosphere, Crust, Outer core, Inner core, and lithosphere.

September 4, 2012

Today the students received their first set of graded papers.  Parents, please ask your child for these papers if they are not given to you!  This set contains their first spelling test as well as English, Math, and Religion work.  Remember, graded work is returned every Tuesday.

Tomorrow is our first pizza day.  Thanks to all who ordered pizza to support our Outdoor Education program!

Our first Family Mass of the year is this Sunday, Sept. 9, at 10:00.  I need one sixth grade student to read at this mass.  Please let me know if your child is able to do this.  I would really like to see all of my class attend this mass together!

This week we are emphasizing our roles as Highly Effective Communicators.
As such we:
  • express ideas clearly and confidently
  • listen to and respect the views of others
  • work individually and cooperatively in finding solutions
  • use technology as a tool to learn and communicate ideas
The Sixth Grade Value for the week is Respect.
There will be a quiz on Religion Chapter One on Friday, Sept. 7.
This week we enjoyed a day off which was Labor Day. We hope that everybody had a great 3 day weekend.  Today we started our first day of dance with Ms. Risotto. We did a really weird stretching time. We also did some exercise drills. After dance we had library/technology time. In technology we are making PowerPoints about ourselves. In science we had to write lots and lots of notes. In the library we had a writing worksheet to do. The worksheet makes us think about what we would do if someone asked us to copy our homework.
